The 3 Rivers Clean Up for 2019 will soon be over. We have had a lot of people volunteer and have managed to remove a lot of litter from Lewisham’s rivers. There are still a few events this week and so if you would like to take part, please visit our calendar of events for information for how you can get involved.
The Nature’s Gym volunteers had a great day clearing litter from the River Ravensbourne. There was very little balsam, but they did clear 12 bags of litter. We were lucky with the weather in once sense because it finally stopped raining, but on the other hand the river was very deep and we were thankful for the waders. Some parts were even too deep for our waders and there was a lot of climbing in and out. It is always a very satisfying job though and the volunteers were rewarded with tea and jammie dodgers at the end
We are beginning to make plans for 3 Rivers Clean Up 2019. We hope that this year will be a successful as our previous events. We haven’t finalised the dates yet, but rest assured we will be back sometime in June! Keep and eye out on this blog, and if you would like to take part in an event, please contact us, or visit the partners page.
As part of the 3 Rivers Clean Up a team from Booking.com came to help clean the River Quaggy in Manor Park. By the end they had 10 bags of rubbish, an old typewriter and a chair. Luckily we didn’t find that much Himalayan balsam, but it is still quite early in the year, so another river wade will be due! If you would like to take part in an event, please check out the 3 Rivers Clean Up blog for dates that sessions will be running.
This year’s 3 Rivers Clean Up will take place between 3rd June – 23rd June. There will be plenty of opportunities to take par throughout the 3 weeks. The 3RiversCleanUp is a three-week long intensive annual volunteer campaign to improve the rivers Ravensbourne, Pool and Quaggy in South East London.
Take your family, your friends or just yourself on an urban wilderness adventure this summer and discover the rivers and the nature they support. Join others in removing harmful rubbish and invasive plant species so as to improve the habitats for both flowers and animals. Learn about nature, about the quality of water and why it’s important and also join in with other associated events such as wildlife habitat management, pond dipping and nature walks, most of which will be suitable for all ages. All events are FREE.
If you would like to get involved have a look at the events calendar over the coming months to find out details of event locations and contact details of the event organisers. Events will start to be populated once dates have been finalised. If you would like a bespoke event for your company, please free to contact us and we will do our best to arrange something.
Events are free but some require pre-booking. If there is heavy rain an event may be cancelled at short notice due to the risk of flash flooding. Please check with the event organiser if the weather is bad.
Another great and successful 3 Rivers Clean Up Festival has come to an end. We are yet to calculate how much rubbish was collected or haw many stands of Himalayan balsam, Giant hogweed or Japanese knotweed were removed or treated, but as soon as we know we will publish them here.
We are all very grateful to everyone that gave up there time to come and help us this year, we got a lot done and our rivers will be thanking us for it! We have had a number of comments from local people through out the 3 weeks about how much the appreciate the work everyone has been doing. Please see below for a few images from the events. We will add more when we get them. Please check back over the coming month or so, by then we will hopefully have collated all the stats from the 3 weeks.
